Route 66: And Oklahoma City looks mighty pretty…

Posted by ayersian , July 28, 2010 11:08

OKC1

Before leaving Tulsa, we took some time to explore the city, ending at Oral Roberts University to see the massive Praying Hands sculpture. Sapulpa and Bristow came and went, but Stroud still sports the old Rock Cafe, now open again after a fire gutted the place in 2008. Chandler and its gently rolling hills were beautiful, and Arcadia boasts the famous Round Barn and the sprawling Pops, a huge soda shop and gas station that sells over 400 bottled sodas from around the country (as Connecticut soda fans, we were surprised that Hosmer Mountain sodas were not featured, though practically all varieties of Avery’s and Foxon Park were).

OKC2

Famished by the time we got to Oklahoma City, we immediately sped to Van’s Pig Stand for a lunch of ribs, pinto beans, a Vanized potato (twice-baked with bacon bits), and their spectacular Pig Sandwich, regally augmented with their pickly relish – one of the best pork sandwiches west of the Mississippi! We then drove out to Choctaw to visit our friend Autumn and little Hayden, both of whom thoroughly appreciated the Haas Gooey Butter Cake we brought them from St. Louis (thanks for the tip, Battra!). Cattlemen’s had our number for dinner: bacon-wrapped filet mignon, calf fries, and coconut cream pie. Next time, we’re coming back here for breakfast – Autumn said it shouldn’t be missed! Tenting at Lake El Reno and then it’s off to Amarillo!

Seriously, that's the best you can come up with for Oklahoma City? Vans? And Cattlemen's, whose heyday was in the '70s? There's so much better food than that in OKC.  At least you could have tried.

Diana,

I don't know if you visit Roadfood.com regularly, but no one can accuse Chris and Amy of not trying.  They and other regulars on this site set a high standard for finding great places to eat around the country, and I have never been led astray by their recommendations.

One reason for this site's existence is for people to share their findings with others, so by all means I would encourage you to let us know about the good food you have found in OKC and elsewhere.  There is no need to take a shot at our friends because you will find folks willing to check out your recommendations.

Your reports are always wonderful -- a great blend of uniquely American images, impressive breadth and depth of road food, and enough tightly written and on-point commentary to hold it all together and keep me looking forward to your next installment.

I want an autographed copy of the book when it is published...!

I assume they still have that great backlit mural of cattlemen on horseback?

Diana, how many of the "better food" places did you let Chris and Amy know about?  Or do you just complain to complain?  I think this Route 66 report is some of the very best I've seen on Roadfood and eagerly anticipate each new post.  I live in Chicago and have been to every place they went to here, and think there are some more places they need to try...when they get back again, you can only do so much in a day!  Anyway...thanks for the great road reporting, hopefully when the 8 y/o is a bit older we'll be able to follow your 'footsteps'.

Van's Pig Stand in Shawnee has been a 'Must Stop ' for us since we read of it in ROADFOOD (The Guttenberg Edition!) That and Jigg's Smoke House are our two food stops for sure in OK. Thanks for reinforcing the validity of our choices.
Keep the reports coming.
