The Bad and the Beautiful

Bridgewater-box

I feel like Jimmy Swaggart in his great media moment of tearfulness: I have sinned (again). While shopping for cheap provisions at Costco, I passed by the counter where they serve food and a combo pizza was coming out of the oven. I ate a slice and, Lord, I loved it: a $2.11 lunch (with tax), not including Diet Coke. But as I packed my dozens of rolls of toilet paper and drums of dishwashing detergent in the car, I knew I needed to atone for such unRoadfoodly behavior. So I drove to nearby Bridgewater Chocolates and paid approximately ten times the cost of lunch for a box of the best chocolate-covered cherries in this or any other universe. I don’t have the talent to take a picture that conveys the liquory-fruity wallop inside these little dark chocolate spheres, but here is what they looked like before I ate them all:

So Michael, what was the real sin: paying Costco $2 or paying Bridgewater $20?  Methinks it's the former.

Good question: both, IMO, are merely venial sins, Costco's evil corporate hegemony balanced by its bargain prices (no excuse whatsoever for eating the pizza, though; that may be a mortal sin in the Roadfood cosmos), Bridgewater's elitist prices balanced by how f-ing good the chocolate is.

And I thought this would be a commentary on one of my favorite movies(with Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner and Gloria Grahame).
