Counter Burger Stretches from Sea to Shining Sea

counterburger

The Counter is a build-your-own-burger chain spread very thinly across the country that specializes in gourmet burgers with high-end toppings. We’ve visited the flagship store in Santa Monica but had never ventured down to the new location at Blue Back Square in West Hartford until now. The burgers are super-fresh Angus beef (the cows raised on a veggie diet, no less), and you can taste it in every succulent bite. The possible combinations of cheeses, toppings, and sauces number into the hundred-thousands, and after much deliberation, our foodie friend Sarah ordered a beef burger with gruyere cheese, grilled onions, and mixed greens on Texas toast. Amy followed a Mexican theme with horseradish cheddar, jalapeños, roasted corn & black bean salsa, guacamole, and spicy sour cream. The Burger of the Month special sounded remarkable, so I chose the Japanese ahi tuna burger with furikake nori, daikon radish, carrots, scallions, mixed greens, and wasabi aioli. We shared a “Fifty-Fifty” order of onion strings and sweet potato fries and, for dessert, a peanut butter malt (basically, a jar of crunchy Jif with a straw!). Chain or not, The Counter makes an extraordinary burger, perfectly assembled to your own specifications, and it’s a fun place to visit with friends who appreciate great food and great service.

They've actually had a location in Australia open since I think March of '09 and shortly after one in Dublin, Ireland.

There's a great interveiw on Burger Business with owner Jeff Weinstein:

redjim64, our burgers began at $8.50 each (1/3 lb.), and you get up to 4 toppings, 1 cheese, and 1 sauce.  Premium toppings cost $1 extra.  Prices vary from store to store, I figured out from the website.

An interesting post and perspective.  And let me add as a frequent visitor to Dublin (where my wife owns and operates a medical clinic) that 'the Counter' is just about the ONLY place where an American hamburger lover can find an acceptable burger in Ireland.

I love the Irish folks, but most of their burgers are, well, let's just say not too tasty.

Carry on, please.

I challenge anyone to find a better peanut-buttery milkshake. I may make the 40 minute drive just for that shake, my friends.

WOW, never heard of this place ... but found one here in the Denver area and they do it in a bowl, too ... which is fantastic.  Can't wait to go try it.

I've been to the Counter in Santa Monica (actually marina Del Rey, I think), and I was just about doubled over with how good that burger is.

Its closest competition in the ahi-tuna department, in my opinion, is the ahi tuna burger at Buddha's Belly, also in Santa Monica. If you haven't tried it, it's recommended, and as often as possible.
