Carnegie Deli in Bethlehem

Posted by Bruce Bilmes and Sue Boyle , November 24, 2009 11:37

Carnegie

Bethlehem, PA, that is.  New York City’s famed Carnegie Deli opened their fifth branch this past Sunday (11/22/09) in the Sands casino.  Besides the original in Manhattan, they also have restaurants in Las Vegas at The Mirage, in Connecticut at the Foxwoods casino, and (this is hard to believe) at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ.  We’ve never been to any of the branches (we’re big fans of the NYC original) but the chatter has always been that they are Carnegie Delis in name only.  For whatever reasons Jewish delis don’t seem to travel well.  Feel free to decide for yourself.  If you do visit the Bethlehem location be sure to let Roadfood.com know what you find.

I did try the one at the mirage.
It was a Carnegie in the size of the corned beef
sandwich, but in no other way. (even the pickles were inferior).

Very excited to visit the newest location of the Carnegie Deli today at the Sands Casino in Bethlehem, PA.  Hadn't had a beef tongue on rye since 1997 in NYC.  And didn't have one today.  This location has none of the ethnic favorites i love/crave.  Will not return until/if they adopt the full menu.  Who did the demographics on this one?

My pastrami sandwich was bigger and equally as delicious as any I have had in my twenty years of going to the NYC deli. The pickles, knish and cheese cake were fantastic. The setting was different but cleaner and more spacious. The price on some items was lower than the NYC price. The Deli staff lacked the typical New York City attitude. Hooray! Overall I'm happy the Deli is in the Lehigh Valley.

Very disappointing lunch at Bethlehem Carnegie.  The sandwich was wonderful of course, the matzoh ball soup was cool, the chocolate egg cream did not have enough syrup or seltzer, the service was awful. The cheesecake that I brought home was EXCELLENT!!!
Friends have been there as well as said the roast beef was dry and overcooked.
The counter that takes the checks from waitress' as well as from walk in customers is a disaster.
