Straight Chili, Till Death Do Us Part

Posted by Bruce Bilmes and Sue Boyle , November 21, 2009 15:29

chili 1

Sure, as Roadfooders we love to eat around, wrapping our mouths around a chili dog here, spooning into a Frito pie there, jumping into a plateful of chili cheese fries when the opportunity presents itself.  We’re only human!  But our stomachs remain forever loyal to the classic bowl of red, unsullied by extraneous starches or hot dog/burger folderol.  Seven of ten Roadfood.com readers, when presented with the poll question which asked How Do You Want Your Chili?, responded with A Bowl an’ a Spoon.  Unasked: beans or not?

Me, too! Chili with a spoon is CHILI. All other versions denote chili as an INGREDIENT in another dish, which might just be a fine dish, but isn't CHILI. I think it would be interesting to conduct the unasked question in a poll. As a Texian, I am a firm believer in chili without beans. Not that I don't enjoy chili with beans; it is just one of those other dishes that include chili as part of the recipe...
;)
