One Thing To Eat Before It’s Too Late

Jane and Michael Stern are on this weekend’s episode of Lynne Rossetto Kasper’s The Splendid Table to discuss Philadelphia’s Famous Fourth Street Deli.  Jane notes that the urban Jewish delicatessen is a rapidly vanishing breed, and wonders if there will be any Jewish delis at all in 25 years.  Michael gives praise to Famous’ corned beef, and their chocolate chip cookies.  You can listen on the radio this weekend; the Sterns’ segment, and the whole show, is also available online.  The photos above are from the Roadfood.com review of Famous Fourth Street.

I think this concern is well-founded.  In the Albany, NY area there was once a number of good Jewish delis.  Now we are down to one, Gershons in Schenectady.  Albany's great deli was Joe's.  It closed years ago.  The sandwiches continued at a place call Platts, but they were bought out by a chain Italian place.
Many of us miss Hy Sofers, which was a kosher deli in downtown Schenectady.  (It was one of my haunts in my college days.)
There are a number of good Italian delis in the area, but when one wants a hot tongue on rye, cappicola is just satisfying.
