Cake, Maryland-Style

Posted by Bruce Bilmes and Sue Boyle , November 10, 2009 22:40

Crab 1

The final issue of Gourmet Magazine (11/09) is available now, and Jane and Michael Stern’s contribution is a survey of some of the finest crab cakes Maryland has to offer, including cakes from Faidley’s (Roadfood.com review), G&M Restaurant & Lounge, The Narrows (pictured above, from the Roadfood.com review), and Suicide Bridge Restaurant.  And they include a bonus sidebar about Smith Island cake, too.  Some of the Sterns’ Gourmet stories are posted on the Gourmet website, and some are not; as far as we can tell, this one is not available online.

Here, btw, is a link to a photo of Smith Island Cake, as served at The Cove in Crisfield. They claim to get theirs direct from a baker on Smith Island:

As much as I enjoy crabcakes, that Smith Island cake looks even better!

Michael, when you were in Crisfield, did you get to try the rebuilt Captain's Galley?

No, Cliff, we didn't get to it...

Crab cakes (well, crab in general) are one of the reasons we choose to live in the Bay area of Maryland.  There are many other reasons as well, but photos such as that above remind me of all that is great about this area.

I may very well make that photo 'wallpaper' on my computer and cellphone. Thanks for sharing it.
