Stop # 32 on my mission to try the 100 Foods to Eat in Iowa Before You Die was J. Bruner’ssteakhouse in Clarinda. Although meat is the main attraction at this east side eatery, the hand-breaded onion rings are undeniably worth a stop on their own. The onions are flavorful, the breading crispy and crackly, and although these rings are fried to a golden brown, they somehow manage to stay this side of greasy. Just be forewarned that this is a classic Midwestern steakhouse with portions intended to satisfy the heartiest of appetites. Unless you are traveling with a ravenous pack, stick with the half-order (pictured above), which allowed us to both immediately satiate our fried food craving and enjoy a snack the next day!
