No, not a classic track from the Peter Gabriel era, but a classic sandwich from the Philippe Mathieu era, circa 1918.  Mr. Mathieu accidentally dropped a French roll in a roasting pan filled with hot beef juices, and the rest is history.  Philippe the Original in Los Angeles, California is still dishing out the French dip, along with nine cent cups of coffee, and Jane and Michael Stern recently appeared on The Splendid Table to talk about it with Lynne Rossetto Kasper.  You can listen to Jane and Michael’s piece, or the whole show, online.

The photo above was taken by a Roadfood classic named wanderingjew, from the Roadfood.com review of Philippe’s.  Check it out.
