The summer season has officially come to a close, but the astronomical calendar claims there are still a couple more weeks of summer left.  Of the summer food shacks that stay open past Labor Day, many will be found operating weekends only for a few more weeks, giving diehards one last chance to enjoy fried clam rolls and hot dogs.  When we asked Roadfood.com readers What Do You Most Want At a Summer Roadside Shack? they answered seafood.  All the choices received significant support, but fried seafood (and lobster rolls) eaten “in the rough” just seems like summer to many people, including us.

Bruce, I couldn't've thought of a better title for this article!  You win the prize!

Several years ago, I was in Maine for a speaking engagement in late September.  Happily, many of the lobster shacks featured on Roadfood were still open at the weekend, and I managed to visit five of them on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  It was a great experience.  Five Islands was my favorite.
