40 days and 40 nights: A modern-day Roadfood exodus

 map

We’ve been discussing it for years and planning it for months, but we’re finally ready to hit the road for a 40-day roadtrip of the northern United States and Canada. We’ll make our way through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington to Vancouver. Then we’ll take Canadian Highway 1 through British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, dipping down into northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan along the way.

Our main focus is to discover uncharted Roadfood while treating ourselves to the best documented restaurants on our route…and to meet as many Roadfooders as possible to enjoy these meals! We’ll write a daily article for Roadfood Digest that spotlights the places and faces that make Roadfood.com such a fun and inspiring community.

We have lots of ideas for meet & eat opportunities—Italian beef in Chicago, butter burgers in Milwaukee, donuts in Portland, donairs in Edmonton, et al.—but we’d love your input and availability for each stop (we’re hoping to meet up with as many of you as possible at YOUR favorite local spot!). Who’s game?

Astonishingly ambitious!  This will be the must read of the Summer.  If you swing through Pittsburgh, I already have some ideas.

Chris and Amy,

This trip looks to be amazing.  I took a peak at the map for all the stops, and it appears to be a trip to remember - certainly much better than forty days and forty nights of rain or forty years in the desert.  I hope you all have a great time, meet up with many wonderful folks on the way, and still have some energy when you come through Buffalo at the tail end of trip (forty minutes at Duff's, forty minutes at Ted's? - OK, I'll stop with the "forty" allusions.)

Sorry; I meant to say "I took a peek at the maps..."  The trip still looks like an amazing adventure and one I look forward to reading about.

Please, find good food in Wyoming and South Dakota! Are you still planning to have a bite in SW CT on the 25th?

We're hoping to kick things off with some donuts from Dottie's on the 27th, before heading down through New Jersey to Philadelphia!

We don't have any other plans on the 1st of July other than hitting up places in Milwaukee. I wonder if there are any other Milwaukee-ites who might want to join us for a meal as well?

July 1 for Milwaukee, is the day-by-day itinerary listed anywhere?

I think you will get a decent crowd in Milwaukee, even on a Wednesday.  Do you mind if I start a Meet & Greet discussion in the forum?

Wow - what an undertaking! We're a bit too close to you to make it an "official" stop, but if you want to kick it off with dinner at Serapes just let us know! Safe travels, and happy eating - we're looking forward to your updates!

When you go through New Jersey, be sure to stop at Davey's Locker, in Montvale.  And ask for the Big Willie, which is Black Forest Ham, bacon, and provolone with dijonnaise on pumpernickel, lightly grilled.  Yum.

I probably won't get to do anything like this until retirement, or win the Powerball, but I can live vicariously!   Can't wait to read.  If you are anywhere near Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA, let us know!

As of right now we are planning on getting to Pittsburgh via Philly, but if plans change and we detour through Scranton, we'll be in touch!
