Uptown Sliders

Sliders used to be the lowest form of hamburger – always cheap, and served in the most déclassé sort of eatery. But in recent years, the disreputable greasy little patty bounded up the status scale to the point where you're likely to encounter one as a butlered hors d'oeuvre at a swanky cocktail party (chances are it will be made of Kobe beef). And the term slider no longer is limited to burgers; it can be applied to just about any bunned mini-sandwich, from the tuna tartare slider at the stylish PS7's in Washington, DC, to the barbecue sliders at Charleston's Magnolia's. The latter, pictured above, come two to an order with a choice of side dishes, including Magnolia's extremely hearty greens.

It's funny how the same thing that happened to martinis has happened to sliders.  The term has a certain kind of cache, but the real thing behind the term is too scary for most people, so they took the basic form (martini glass, miniature bunned sandwich) and applied it to anything and everything.  But kept the name.

In the case of sliders it's not such a bad idea.  As much as we love real sliders the newfangled kind are also fun.  They are really a new kind of food, for which there was not a name before (mini-sandwiches just don't sound interesting).

On the other hand, there already was a name for the new kind of martini: cocktail.

I completely agree -- and you know that sliders have reached the mainstream when they're marketing a Ronco-styled home slider maker on TV! My current favorites are the Bottlecap Sliders at Archie Moore's in Wallingford: mini cheeseburgers topped with crunchy fried jalapenos slices.

I sometimes think that, for the sake of research, I ought to try a Burger King Burger Shot, which seems to be their version of a slider. But the BK nearest me is virtually across the street from the Sycamore Drive-In. Guess where my car autopilots itself every time?

Don't bother with the BK burger shots...they were abysmal..tasted like nothing...now Jack in the Box mini burgers..those are darn tasty for a fast food chain.  Nice and thick.

I think mini cheeseburgers topped with crunchy fried jalapenos slices sounds really, really good.

Shhh... guys, keep this just between the three of us... but I've tried the BK Burger Shots.  As a White Castle lover who does not live near a WC, I was tempted.  Alas, they taste like a small BK burger.  Not a slider.
