Top Connecticut Food? New Haven Pizza

Pepe.  Sally.  Modern.  The big three of New Haven pizza.  That’s where Roadfooders most want to go when they get to Connecticut, according to the results of the latest Roadfood.com poll.  Fried clams placed and steamed cheeseburgers showed.  Perhaps most surprising was hot dogs weak fourth place finish.  Presumably that was because, although the state is well-known for its way with the tube steak, most people probably feel they can find something similar close to home (or in their own kitchen).

I'm not surprised that pizza takes the biggest piece of the pie -- that's only right; but I am shocked that hot dogs were beaten out by both fried clams and steamed cheeseburgers. Not that we don't have great fried clams in Connecticut, nor that we are virtually the only game for steamers; but IMHO Connecticut's hot dogs rank up there with the nation's greats. But then, when it comes to hot dogs, I lose all rational perspective. The editor on our new book, 500 Things to Eat Before It's Too Late, joked that 100 of them were hot dogs: a slight exaggeration. (She showed no interest in my proposal for a book titled 500 Hot Dogs To Eat Before It's Too Late!)

I would buy the book "500 Hot Dogs To Eat Before It's Too Late" and imagine it would do pretty well.  (OK, maybe the number should be 300 instead of 500...)  I had a hard time deciding what my favorite CT food is but would rank the top three as 1) apizza; 2) steamed burgers; and 3) hot dogs.  All are very good, making it hard to make a choice.

Considering how small the steamed cheeseburger region is, it's pretty amazing it did so well.  Seems they've been getting a lot of attention around Roadfood.com over the last year or so.  Something about them is especially intriguing.  I mean, really, can you count the number of places in CT that serve a steamer on one hand?  Certainly two.

I haven't been to Connecticut in over 35 years. But, if I had the opportunity to go there, as much as I love fried clams, I'd have to make a bee line to Pepe in New Haven for clam pizza with white sauce. Then, I'd have the fried clams.

Being from CT, I'd rank it: pizza, hot dogs, ice cream (how ice cream didn't even make the poll is surprising), steamed cheeseburgers, doughnuts, fried clams, lobster.
