Buffalo/Rochester Food You'd Most Like To Try

Posted by Bruce Bilmes and Sue Boyle , May 23, 2009 15:52

Buffalo

What do Roadfooders most want to sample during the September Roadfood trip to Buffalo and Rochester, NY?  According to the recent Roadfood.com poll that would be beef on weck.  You see weck rolls more and more outside of Buffalo but, for the most part, you have to travel to the source to sample them.  For the uninitiated, roast beef on weck is a Buffalo specialty served on hard rolls crusted with coarse salt and caraway seeds.

FYI, the Rochester specialties from the above list are: garbage plate, Zweigle’s white hots, and Genny Cream (Sahlen’s and frozen custard are pretty common in both cities).

Now wait just a minute -- you've illustrated a delicious-looking beef on weck here, yet that photo is from the All-Star Sandwich Bar in the very un-Buffalo locale of Cambridge, Massachusetts.  I see through your clever ruse!

I didn't think anyone would notice!  Truth is, the All Star photo is best beef on weck picture we've got.  I suspect that by late September we'll have some better Buffalo examples in our files...

Chris,

What about that picture that you took when we stopped at Anderson's on your way through in March?  That was a pretty good photograph of a roast beef sandwich (on the "Roadfood in your hometime" trip report).
