At the end of the day, I couldn’t have Spike’s version of a hot weiner as my finale. Hoping that I’d see one last weiner stand on my way out of town, I spotted the beacon-like marquee of Mr. Gyro at 1345 Hartford Avenue in Johnston. It wasn’t an official New York System restaurant, but it did feature gyros and Greek specialties, so I knew that the weiner sauce would be prime. Though it was definitely chunkier than the others, the sauce was delicious. The onions were strong and coarse, but the weiner—Little Rhody’s hand-cut fattie—tasted old, as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. This was by no means a conclusive finish to this hot weiner tour, but it did make me realize one thing: I need another day to sample more gaggahs! I’m already planning my next trip to Rhode Island to research pizza strips, dynamites, stuffies, and jonnycakes…with an Awful Awful for dessert!
