Wending my way through Providence, I made a U-turn to sample a hot wiener (note the variant spelling on the building) at Fidas at 270 Valley Street. Though this was not an advertised New York System establishment, the gaggah looked and tasted like the others that I sampled. I noticed that the chopped onions were rather large chunks, so I skipped that option in favor of savoring the meat sauce, which was quite flavorful and accented by the celery salt. The wiener was the fatter, hand-cut variety from Little Rhody and was somewhat chewier than the others, especially the skin. The bun was a little harder than the rest, but I had no problem inhaling it in four bites. According to Quahog.org, Fidas was the scene of a fatal shooting of Providence policeman Cornell Young, Jr. in 2000 and a second shooting in 2002. Rumor has it that a nearby shopping mall wanted Fidas to change their name in order to erase the bad mojo. From the show of locals in booths and at the counter, it seemed like business as usual for Fidas without any criminal vibe.
