Continuing on my quest in search of Omaha’s best burger, I made a stop at the often-lauded Dinker’s Bar and Grill on the south side of the city. Dinker’s is far from a local secret, given the oversized sign advertising “Omaha’s best burger” that stands out front and is visible from I-480. However, this 45 year-old neighborhood bar is somewhat set off on its own, an island of eating and entertainment in the middle of a sea of residential blocks. Once your eyes have adjusted to the darkness inside, walk to the back of the long, busy room and place your food order at the back counter. Drinks of the alcoholic and non-alcoholic variety must be ordered separately from the bar. The menu includes items not served on buns, but given the fact that the burgers are the main attraction, it is possible to get a fresh meal at near-fast food speed. The burger itself was a tasty, hand-formed patty, charred and crispy on the outside with a moist interior. The bun, though a bit dry for my taste, was at least thick and hefty enough to support the 1/3-lb. hunk of ground beef. The quality of the burger, in conjunction with the local barroom ambience, make for a solid Roadfood stop. But best burger in Omaha? Still searching.
