Following a north-south route, my first stop for hot weiners was Sam’s New York System at 1031 Mineral Spring Avenue in North Providence. There are two sizes of weiner sold by Little Rhody: the fatter kind that must be cut from a long rope, and a smaller tubesteak with closed ends. I called ahead to see which one Sam’s served, and with a thick Greek accent, the seasoned counterwoman admonished me over the phone in no uncertain terms, “You come in today, your order one, and you find out for yourself.” Admiring her brazen directness, I walked into Sam’s where she was waiting to take my order. This hot weiner was definitely of the fatter variety, snuggled into a small bun with a fine meat sauce, mustard, celery salt, and a literal mess of chopped onions. My palate detected allspice in the sauce before being walloped by the oniony tsunami of flavor. My fingertips were covered with a light sheen of grease, which proved the gaggah’s authenticity. While the gyros and cheeseburgers will be saved for my return trip to Sam’s, this hot weiner was a solid start to a delicious day!
