The silver stop (#25) on my mission to sample the 100 foods to eat in Iowa before you die was at the Redwood Steakhouse in the small town of Anita. #13 on the Des Moines Register’s list simply read fresh beer-battered onion rings—a description which could not prepare us for what was to come. Surely there should be another name for these hand-battered, ultra-crispy circles of onion that in no way resemble the bland, densely-battered hoops found in fast-food chains! Although Redwood is best known--and loved--for their selection of steak, seafood, and pork dishes, it turns out that many devotees (including our friend Angela) make the trek to Anita just to satisfy a craving for this ultra-tasty appetizer. After indulging in these bands of pure onion bliss, we can certainly see why!
