Italian Beef Demands Recount

A recent Roadfood poll put Philly cheese steaks on top as the #1 Favorite Beef Sandwich (Non-Burger/BBQ Division). But for the 16% of us who voted for Chicagoland’s Italian Beef, we urge some reconsideration. On my way to research Iowa’s breaded pork tenderloins, I spent the night in Tinley Park, Illinois, and my hotel happened to be directly across from Pop’s Italian Beef & Sausage at 7301 West 183rd Street. I took this as genuine RF providence and hurried into the store. Of all of the truly great American sandwiches, the Italian Beef had eluded me until this fateful night, when the staff at Pop’s greeted me as a long lost friend. “You’ve never had an Italian Beef? You haven’t truly lived, then! Let’s set this man up with his first sandwich!” exclaimed the smiling cashier. Joyfully I chose the beef and sausage combo with hot peppers, and my first bite was an utter revelation.  The tender beef, the sausage’s snap, the excellent bread softened with gravy, and the spicy tingle of the peppers all converged for a Times Square-like fireworks display for my tastebuds. This is easily one of my top sandwiches of all time, and I’ll always remember my first Italian Beef experience. “You’ll come back, won’t you?” asked the cashier on my way out. Thank you, Pop’s, for changing my RF life!

Recounting is hard, hard work.  Perhaps... if you'd bring, say, a dozen beef and sausage combos our way to sustain us through the massive task, we might get through it a little quicker... (some fries would be a nice touch, too).

Believe me, Bruce, if I could, I would! I wish they had a delivery service to Massachusetts...

That is a real beauty Chris!  I'm glad your first Italian beef experience was a good one.

Pop's looks like it is in a strip mall.  Does anyone else think there seems to be more good Roadfood joints in strip malls now?

That's an interesting question, Cliff.  I don't know the answer, but my guess is that we're just paying more attention to these restaurants.  That is, they've always been there but Roadfooders have tended to dismiss strip mall places because they have no soul and often lack a sense of permanence.

I think what Roadfooders are acknowledging more these days is how some of these strip mall places can have food so good they transcend the prosaic locations.

Pop's rocks! I used to work near their location at 127th and Harlem and we ordered from there all the time.

Italian beefs = awesome
Italian beefs on the Sout' Side = double awesome ;)

Having grown-up in SJ, just across the Delaware from Philly, its hard for me to give my vote to the Italian Beef. Its a loyalty thing mostly I think. That said, I gotta say that I'm fond of the IB...very very fond. I was surprised it didnt receive more votes. Its definitely on equal ground with a cheesesteak.

Soooo glad to see you have discovered utopia!  I had no idea that italian beefs weren't known outside Chicago, when I went to New York they had never heard of it.  Next time though try AL's Beef its the best!
