100 things to eat…Stop #24

Stop #24 on my mission to try the 100 foods to eat in Iowa before you die was at the Roadfood-reviewed Jaarsma Bakery in the town of Pella. Over the course of the past several months, I have had the opportunity to sample several different Dutch letters throughout the state of Iowa. And though all have been mouth-wateringly delicious, Jaarsma’s version easily stands out from the rest. This S-shaped pastry expertly guides your mouth through 3 distinct taste/texture sensations: (1) a dense layer of almond paste is (2) enveloped by a soft pastry interior, which is, in turn, (3) shielded by a crispy, crackly outer layer. In my oh-so-humble opinion, the Dutch letter may be the perfect pastry—it is just sweet and light enough, but doesn’t leave you struggling through a lethargic sugar coma afterward. For the prime example of this perfect pastry, Jaarsma is certainly the place to stop (and they mail order too!).

Being the dedicated marzipan fanatic that I am, I couldn’t resist sampling a few more of the bakery’s signature sweets including…

P1000908

an almond-filled butter cookie,

P1000911

a heavy-in-the-hand almond tart…

P1000912

and an almond crispie. And for dessert (!)…

P1000906

a pair of lemon sour cream poppyseed cakes that were so moist that they put not only Duncan Hines, but grandma to shame. These cakes seemed to melt upon contact with the tongue! Delicious!

How did you like Pella?  You must have visited while the tulips were in bloom.  I think it's adorable.

Amy, did they have any other letters besides the "S"?  That almond crispie looks delicious!

As far as i have ever seen...they only come in that letter shape.  Anyone know why?  I have never really thought about it, I guess.

One of the things we learned about Dutch letters when we did the Roadfood Christmas Gifts series is that the name "Dutch letters" is misleading, because the only letter traditionally made is S, for Sinterklaas.  That's not to deny that some enterprising Dutch bakers here and there may bake other letters for special occasions or requests (or even all the time), but normally, the letter S is the Dutch letter.

We're certainly not experts on Dutch culture and cuisine, though, so we may not have the story quite right.  If anyone has more info on the subject of Dutch letters we'd love to hear about it.

Sure seems to be what I found by a quick search on teh interwebz.  I know that Jaarsma says on their site that they will do other letters on request, but the Sinterklaas theory sounds like the real deal.

I have had a straight Dutch letter once--I suppose looks like an i or an l--but that's the only one other than the traditional S.

Nancy, Pella is a lovely town. The annual tulip festival is actually coming up this weekend I believe!

Cliff, the almond crispie was quite delicious. I think my favorite was the almond tart though!
