500 Things to Eat Before It’s Too Late…

Posted by Bruce Bilmes and Sue Boyle , March 18, 2009 00:11

… and the Very Best Places to Eat Them.  This is the Jane and Michael Stern book so many of us have been waiting for.  Not only will you learn where to find the best examples of things like gumbo and whoopie pies but, for the first time, the Sterns have included full-color photographs.  We think this will be one of the most popular of the already very popular Jane and Michael Stern food books, and so do the early reviewers.  The Denver Post says, “From biscuits made in the South to cherry pies in the Midwest and mid-Atlantic crab cakes, the dishes are described so well your mouth will water.”  The Bay Area’s Mercury News says the new book “shows the depth that sets them apart from the pack.”

500 Things to Eat Before It’s Too Late won’t be published until later in the spring, but you can put your order in right now through Roadfood.com and Amazon.com by clicking on the book image above, or you can click right here (and they’re currently offering a nice pre-publishing discount, too).

Extremely observant Roadfooders will note that it actually IS too late to eat one of the items pictured on the cover, which is being changed accordingly. Do you know which of the five pictures has become history?

I believe it would be the long john from Butler's Colonial Donuts.

Bill, you are right. They were one of the favorites of our editor, who's in Boston, who actually brought a bunch of them to the sales meeting at the publishing house several months ago for all to taste. She is especially sad about the loss.

We had doubts about the title of the book, but "Before It's Too Late" really makes sense ... unfortunately.

The actual donuts pictured are long johns, which as the Sterns describe them are feather-light long donuts split open and stuffed with real whipped cream and a line of raspberry jam.  We never had the chance to try them.  Have you ever heard of anything that sounded so delicious though?

I was wondering if the  breaaded pork tenderloin made the top 500?

Jean Anne: yes, without a doubt. Several of them did.

Did Sublime Donuts near Georgia Tech in Atlanta make the book? The A-Town creams and Orange Dream donuts are heavenly!
