100 things to eat…Attempted Stops #18, 19, 20, & 21

When I first set out to sample the 100 things to eat in Iowa before you die, I was curious to see how many of the restaurants from the 2006 list were still luring folks in for their signature dishes in light of our shaky economy. Less than a quarter of the way through the list, I have already been Travelin’ Manned (*see definition below) a total of four times, therein missing out on the Mile-High Lemon Meringue Pie from Stone’s Restaurant in Marshalltown (#68), a margarita from O’Malley and McGees in Ames (#12), the Black Forest Cake from Martin’s Brandenburg in Waverly (#98), and the kolaches from Sykora Bakery in Cedar Rapids (#21). Although Sykora’s closure appears to be a temporary one (the bakery found itself under 8 feet of water after the floods last summer), there is sadly no indication that the other three will be re-opening.

*Trav-el-in Manned [trav-uhl-in mand]

-verb (used without object)

1. To arrive at a Roadfood location that your thoughts have been preoccupied with, and your stomach has been grumbling in anticipation of, only to find that the establishment is closed (either temporarily or indefinitely).

Below the fold?  My definition comes below the fold?  That's outrageous.

I am not going to rest until this becomes an entry in the Urban Dictionary!

Amy, I can only assume this started happening to you after you met the real Travelin Man in Memphis?

I would like to be able to say that I caught something contagious while in Memphis, but sadly it started happening to me back in the fall. I really need to start heeding the warning of "always call ahead."
