What started as a fish fry for a couple hundred people in 1966 has turned into a two-day event for 50,000.  It’s the 43rd annual Grant Seafood Festival in Grant, FL.  There’s music and arts and crafts, but what you’re really here for is seafood, and lots of it!  Here’s a partial list of what’s available: lobster bisque, steamed clams, calamari, fried shrimp, fried clam strips, seafood dinners of fish, hushpuppies, slaw, and beans, conch fritters, shrimp and tuna kabobs, raw oysters, Manhattan clam chowder, steamed oysters, New England clam chowder, fried oysters, deviled crabs, fried scallops…

The festival began yesterday and continues today, 9 am until 5 pm.  Parking and admission is free.  See the festival website for details.

I live very close to the Grant Seafood Festival.  It was a lot more fun years ago (wasn't everything?).  I remember my first trip - almost 20 years ago.  There were Mercedes and BMWs (folks from the ritzy side of Vero Beach driving north) parked in unpaved (usually muddy) parking lots right next to pick ups (folks from West Melbourne driving south) with gun racks.

The seafood was fresh and affordable.  The entertainment was cheesy (fiddle players, barber shop quartets, etc.), but it was all mostly in good fun.

Then, someone got the idea that there was money to be made here.  When I went a couple of years ago, the portion sizes were significantly smaller and everything cost more.  Someone got the idea to get national touring acts for music - but, the whole thing kind of flopped.

I was out of town this past weekend, but heading down to the Grant Seafood Festival likely wouldn't have been high on my list of things to do anyway.
