Clamless in Connecticut

Pepe's-shrimp-1

9:15, Saturday night at the Fairfield location of Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana, tragedy strikes: "We ran out of clams 20 minutes ago," says the waitress. Not that Pepe's plain tomato pie isn't excellent; and I love the spicy pepperoni and clumpy sausage; but my taste buds were on a no-mutz, white-clam-pizza mission. "We can do the same thing with shrimp," the waitress suggested. Indeed, the shrimp pizza turned out to be a decent stand-in. While it lacks the nectarous oceanic savor of clam juice and, strangely, is made without garlic, it does deliver that magical one-two punch of crisp-chewy crust and luxurious shellfish. The shrimp are big-bite sized and there were plenty of them.

Happened to us on a freezing December night in '05 at the New Haven location -- after a 45 minute wait on line outside, arrived to find a sign on the door: "No Clams" -- heartbreaking.
