As its name suggests, J&B BBQ, on Route 6 in Brewster, New York, is primarily a barbecue place. You can smell smoke smolder the moment you walk in the door, and clearly the proprietors are proudest of their pigcentric North Carolina culinary roots. But North Carolina also is a fount of good fried chicken and last night I discovered that this humble kitchen is no slouch in that department, either. The chicken is encased in a wickedly crisp, vividly spicy crust that wants to melt in your mouth as soon as you crunch into it. A four-piece dinner, for $8.95, comes with two side dishes (mac 'n' cheese and collard greens pictured above [and in the background is a pulled pork dinner with baked beans and cole slaw]).
