Aside from sharing exceptional food, we love meeting Roadfooders for the frivolity that ensues. Take our Phoenix-based buddy Desertdog. Since we were making our annual pilgrimage to the area, he suggested that we meet at Thee Pitts Again at 5558 West Bell Road in Glendale. Not only did he regale us with stories of his BBQ judging at competitions throughout the Southwest, but Desertdog also managed to keep us and our server in stitches with jokes the entire time. His pulled pork sandwich (pictured above) was stunning with its cascade of glistening, housemade sauce and colorful cole slaw.

Our plate of pulled pork, brisket, BBQ beans, and cornbread with honey butter (above) was wonderful, as were the crispy onion rings (below) with light, tangy breading.

Amy also ordered a bowl of the “Not Too Spicy” chili (below) with chopped onions poking out of the blanket of cheddar cheese.

For dessert, we all pitched in to polish off a bowl of warm bread pudding (below).

Thee Pitts Again is managed with the same philosophy as the owners’ previous restaurant, Thee Pitts: award-winning BBQ with as many homemade fixings as possible. Multitudinous trophies and ribbons line the walls inside, while televisions air cooking shows, outdoor programs, and Thee Pitts Again’s inclusion on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. We graciously give thanks to Desertdog for taking time out to meet us for lunch, and to Thee Pitts Again for their excellent BBQ—and we’ll be back soon to try the seasonal rattlesnake appetizer!

Hey, looks like Dean's hair got longer since the last photo I've seen of him.

A must if you are in Arizona is a trip to Tucson for a visit to Mr. K's BBQ.  The Kendrick family knows BBQ and while it has a style all it's own, it is certainly a nod to Texas BBQ.  The slaw is not for everyone, it is out of character for most to eat cinnamon spiced slaw, but the taste grows on you.  Like lovin, they believe in grillin long, low and slow.  If you are lucky you can take a look at Mr. Kendrick's labor of love, a museum dedicated to the African American experience.
