Coney Island Nathan’s to Stay Put (Maybe)

The plans for the proposed redevelopment of Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY has alarmed many frank fans and hot dog historians: there’s been talk of replacing the original Nathan’s (Roadfood.com review), at the corner of Surf Ave. and Stillwell Ave., with a hotel.  The chief executive of Nathan’s, Eric Gatoff, has responded by saying they “intend” to keep this Nathan’s right where it is.  See Karim Fahims’s entry in The New York Times’ City Room blog.

We’re not convinced.  “No intention to replace” sounds to our ears intentionally less definitive than “we absolutely will not replace.”  The proposed rezoning of the land that Nathan’s sits on will allow for a far more profitable use of the space.  It’s hard for us to see how the Nathan’s Famous corporation will choose not to take advantage of the situation.  At the very least, we can see a hotel/entertainment complex being built on the site, with some version of the restaurant founded by Nathan Handwerker in 1916, remaining on the ground floor.  We’ll keep Roadfood Digest readers up-to-date on the situation.

It sounds like I had better visit Nathan's soon.

I think the idea of keeping Nathan's there, at least at the ground floor of a hotel, is a great idea. In fact, that would increase their profits I would think. Time's have changed and Nathan has to go with the times. But getting rid of the Nathan's altogether would be bad.

Who knows what will happen. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Although it might benefit Nathan's as a corporation to sell, personally I hope it doesn't happen. I consider Nathan's an American icon and a big part of history. It would be nice to have Nathan's remain, even if it has to be somehow changed or renovated. It would be better if it would be left as it is.

Nathan's HAS to stay there.  It's one of the very few vestiges of Coney Island history that hasn't been uprooted, torn down or developed to death.  I'd be willing to chain myself to the place to save it from a wrecking ball.  Closing, moving or building on top of Nathans would be a death blow to Coney Island and an insult to history.
