When outsiders talk Philly cheesesteaks, the conversation usually centers around the trio of Pat’s (Roadfood.com review), Geno’s (Roadfood.com review), and Jim’s (Roadfood.com review). In January’s Gourmet magazine, Jane and Michael Stern visit the cheesesteak shops of the locals and, as a subplot, try to learn why the great steak joints are run by Italian-Americans.
Included in the story are Mama’s Pizzeria in Bala Cynwyd, Dalessandro’s Steaks and Hoagies, John’s Roast Pork, Steve’s Prince of Steaks, Chink’s, and Leo’s Steak Shop in Folcroft (and they even pay a tongue-in-cheek visit to Barclay Prime on Rittenhouse Square for a luxury “cheesesteak” made with Kobe beef, lobster, truffles, and Parmesan brioche – that one goes for a cool $100!). It’s an article you’ll want to clip and bring with you on your next visit to the City of Brotherly Love.
