In anticipation of Roadfood poster wheregreggeats.com’s springtime Western Mass Greet & Eat, I passed a sign for Bub’s BBQ in Sunderland and decided to grab a sandwich. The shack is located off Route 116 past the exit for the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Bub’s smiling porcine mascot beams at customers from the large sign out front. As Gregg said in his post, Bub’s wouldn’t win any serious BBQ competitions, but the place has a definitive Roadfood vibe and has been a fan favorite for almost thirty years. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich, which comes with your choice of two sides: the BBQ Ranch beans and sweet potato mash called to me. The pork was ruggedly chopped with large pieces of char and heaped on a bun. The meat was not as moist as it looked, but the spicy tomato-vinegar sauce on the side greatly enhanced every bite with a spicy kick. The sweet potatoes were smooth and flavorful with cinnamon accents, and the tangy beans could be the best in New England. Spring is a long way off, but I’m definitely looking forward to Gregg’s event in May.
