20 Days, 20 Gifts. #13: Brisket and Sausage and Ribs, Oh My!

Those of you looking for gifts for residents of barbecue country can stop reading right here.  For the rest of you, we offer what, in our experience, is the mail-order barbecue that comes closest to the real thing: Black’s Barbecue of Lockhart, Texas (Roadfood.com review).  If you’re a veteran of barbecue-by-mail you know that it’s a compromise; the smoked meats are better than anything you can find locally, or turn out of your oven, but they’re really only a shadow of what you can find on-site.  Black’s is better than that.  If you take a whole Black’s smoked brisket, and heat it long and low in your oven, your house will smell like a Texas pit, and the beef will be smoky and juicy and full-flavored.  Don’t ignore the house-made sausage, either.  Even the pork ribs, here in Texas beef country, are good.

If you were to order a la carte we’d definitely recommend going with the brisket, but our choice is the package known as Edgar Black’s Favorites: a whole six-pound brisket, a two-pound rack of pork ribs, and four rings each of their regular, jalapeno and cheese, and garlic sausages.  The package will cost you $99.99 plus shipping (and know that shipping will add a significant amount to the total).  This is a gift for someone you like very, very much (and who enjoys good Texas barbecue!).

Black's is the absolute worst in Lockhart.  No flavor at all in any of the meats or sides.

You are doing your readers a disservice by suggesting this place.  Kreuz Market and Smitty's Market, which are located in Lockhart as well, are the two best places in the state, and 2 of the best places in the country, to get good BBQ.

Black's has excellent BBQ! Last Saturday I was there getting some turkey to go and a guy walked up who said he had made it a point to try all the places in Lockhart and he thought Blacks's was the best. Another group from Honda said they had seen the place on a Travel Channel show and driven from Hondo (90 miles) and said "You're BBQ stood up to it - It was worth the trip".

I won't run down the other places too much - the surly help, the tasteless shoulder clod (for pot roasts, in my opinion, not BBQ). I would say go try Black's and see for yourself. The grandson of the originator is now running the place (along with his son, the 4th generation) so you know these folks know their way around the pit. And they will show you around the pit. I always like a restaurant that will take you through their kitchen.
