In search of Omaha’s best burger

Since moving to the Midwest, Omaha has quickly become one of my favorite destinations for food-related exploration. In a city known for its prime cuts of meat, I feel certain that my chances of experiencing one of America’s best burgers must be pretty high.  So far, however, I have visited two local favorites (Louie M’s Burger Lust and Stella’s), the burgers at which were very good…but fell short of spectacular. So the question for the audience is, where is Omaha’s best burger?

Pictured above is a spicy jalapeno cheeseburger and some super thick onion rings from Louie M’s Burger Lust. The patty was thick and clearly homemade, but a little overcooked for my taste. The onion rings were so thick as to necessitate mouth stretching. Below is one of the hand-formed patties from Stella’s in Bellevue, as featured in George Motz’s Hamburger America. The juicy patty was tasty, but overwhelmed by an excessively bready bun.

Chris,

I didn't make it to Louie M's, but I still rank Stella's as one of the best I've ever had. We made it to Dinker's which also serves a fine burger although I think Tessaro's in Pittsburgh and Ward's Pubick House here in Rhode Island come very close. There were a couple of other places that caught my attention in Omaha, but we didn't have a chance to try. Goldbergs near Rosenblatt stadium is another tavern that offered a self promoted "best burger in Omaha" sign. King Kong's- a local fast food burger joint also caught my attention with a "life sized" replica of King Kong on top of the building. When I returned home, I looked them up on Yelp and they seem to have gotten some favorable reviews.

For chargrilled burgers you can try:

Goldbergs 50th and Dodge St.
King Kong 44th and Dodge St.
Leo's Diner 60th and Maple St. They aren't open in the evening and weekends are breakfast only so this is a M - F lunch.
If you want to take a 180% twist on a burger you should try the chargrilled veggie burger at McFosters Natural Kind Cafe 302 So. 38th St. http://mcfosters.com  Seriously.

Others I like.

Danny's Grill & Bar NE corner of 72nd and Blondo St.
Dinkers Bar 2368 So 29th St.
Anthony's Steakhouse 72nd and F St.
Barrett's 43rd and Leavenworth.

I can't proclaim anyone the "best", but these are some of my favorites including the 2 places you have already tried.
