Stop #10 on my trek around Iowa was at Oasis Falafel in Iowa City (#59 on the list of 100 foods to eat in Iowa before you die). I didn’t necessarily have high expectations for Middle Eastern food in the heart of the Midwest, but was surprisingly wowed by the falafel sandwich. There was barely enough room in the oversized pita to contain the large, intensely flavorful falafel balls (fried in a local soybean oil!) and marinated chunks of cucumber and tomato (not to mention generous helping of homemade tahini sauce)! This falafel joint is a great stop for food that is fast, flavorful, and decidedly different from the American home cooking that the Hawkeye State is well known for.
