The State Fair of Louisiana closes out the year in state fairs.  The state fair season resumes next year on February 5th with the Florida State Fair.  Shreveport’s State Fair of Louisiana was founded in 1906 and, while recognized as Louisiana’s state fair, has no formal state government sanction.  It is privately run.

Be sure to sample some of the local cuisine at the fair, such as crawfish etoufee, shrimp creole, and seafood gumbo.  You’ll also find baked sweet potatoes, BBQ, and shrimp-on-a-stick.  Don’t miss the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry exhibit for free samples of Louisiana treats.  Entertainment includes two nights of PRCA Rodeo, a demolition derby  and monster truck exhibition, the state cheerleading championships, and a couple of big gospel music celebrations: six hours of gospel music on Saturday the 25th, and another five hours the following Saturday.  Wayne Toups & Zydecajun performs on 11/1.

Livestock plays a major role, perhaps the major role, at the State Fair of Louisiana.  Each day is positively packed the likes of Herefords, swine shows, Charolais competitions, and Brahman bull judging.  Be sure to check the day’s schedule when you arrive so you don’t miss your favorites.

The state fair has some amazing food.  Please come out to support our local artists as well.  After your trip to the fair we would love for you to stop by the WCEF.  The World Cultural Economic Forum (WCEF) takes place throughout Louisiana in October with three key components including a two-day Forum in New Orleans Oct. 30-31 for global cultural economy leaders to discuss best practices for growing cultural industries; a World Bazaar and Marketplace showcasing artisans and vendors from around the world in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Oct. 30-Nov. 1; and the Passport Events across the state throughout
October showcasing all of Louisiana’s unique cultural assets.

If you are in Shreveport for the fair, you have to go to Herby-K's and have a shrimpbuster!!!  Was there 2 weeks ago for a conference, and one of my teammates (who lived in LA for awhile) took me there.  It's not downtown - it's about 6-8 mins away. (we went past the "Louisiana Hayride" where Elvis sang and then under a highway overpass....I couldn't tell you how to get there....but ask someone!)   Have a Shrimpbuster and some onion rings too.  The sauce is AWESOME.   Enjoy!
