The Greater Gulf State Fair, in Mobile, AL, would seem to be about as close as you can get to an Alabama State Fair (Alabama being one of eight states, by our reckoning, that do not have a state fair). The Greater Gulf is a relatively new fair, as big regional fairs go, having started in the 1950’s. The fair features a nightly concert schedule, PRCA rodeo, and plenty of agricultural competitions and livestock shows. Of course, there’s a huge midway.
The Greater Gulf offers some Gulf coast cuisine, such as jambalaya, shrimp bayou, boudin, and red beans and rice. There are also pot roast sandwiches, Italian sausage po’ boys, BBQ beef and pork, and fair food classics like chili dogs, turkey legs, and roasted corn-on-the-cob.
