What's Your Favorite "60's-Style" Food?

In a recent poll of Roadfood.com readers about favorite 60s foods, pigs in blankets came out on top.  There was some discussion about just what pigs in blankets are.  The poll referred to the always-popular mini-hot dogs that are wrapped in pieces of refrigerated crescent roll or biscuit dough and then baked.  They are often dipped in mustard before eating.  Sometimes people get creative and slip a little cheese between the dough and dog before baking, or switch out the dogs for some other kind of sausage.  Readers pointed out that pigs in blankets also refer to stuffed cabbage rolls and breakfast pancakes wrapped around breakfast sausage.

Our experience with pigs in blankets is, it doesn’t matter what type of party or gathering you are attending: if pigs in blankets are served, the platter will be emptied in minutes.  Even at the most chichi events, where people will laugh at the sight of them, and where the pigs in blankets will be the object of much ridicule, they will still always be the first to go.  It’s one of our immutable laws of party foods (perhaps mutable at vegan gatherings… perhaps… hmmm, soy sausage…).

Some people didn’t know what rumaki were.  They are pieces of chicken liver paired with a slice of water chestnut and wrapped in bacon, then basted with an Asian-style sauce and baked.  We’re not certain but we think we remember reading that they were invented by Trader Vic’s.
