The South Carolina State Fair in Columbia is put on by the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina, with origins that reach back to 1839. While the fair is generally considered to be the official state fair of South Carolina, the state has no official involvement in the fair, and provides no funding.
Like to eat at state fairs? The South Carolina State Fair features a wide selection of comestibles, including fried corn on the cob, BBQ chicken, fried sweet potatoes, pecan rolls, BBQ ribs, roasted peanuts, and mini hamburgers and cheeseburgers. See the complete list here.
The big concerts feature Sugarland with the Zac Brown Band, and Josh Turner; Nashville legend George Jones will also be performing. There will be canning and baking competitions, and competitions for the finest pecans and sweet potatoes. Check out the judging of the cattle, swine, and dairy goats, and enjoy the horse shows. Be a farmer for a day: pick apples, dig potatoes, and gather eggs. The Roadside Market will feature fresh local produce. And don’t miss the SPAM demonstrations, always a favorite of ours!
