The governor of Louisiana issued a proclamation in 1973 that declared Bridge City to be the “Gumbo Capital of the World.” See how Bridge City earned that honor this weekend as over 2000 gallons of both seafood and chicken/sausage gumbo will be prepared at Bridge City’s “world famous” Gumbo Festival. Gumbo’s not all! You’ll also have a chance to enjoy red beans and rice with sausage, jambalaya, and homemade cakes, along with some more universal fair foods such as funnel cakes and hot dogs. There will be a gumbo cooking contest on Sunday.
Enjoy plenty of live Cajun and zydeco music, surely fais-do-do suitable. There will be rides, a beautiful child contest, a 5K run over the Huey Long Bridge, and Gumbo Festival Royalty (Miss Creole Gumbo and King Creole Gumbo). Want to try your hand at concocting a gumbo in your own kitchen? The festival website offers a couple of interesting gumbo recipes.
