Peanuts are a major crop is southeastern Virginia, and the peanut is celebrated each year at The Virginia Peanut Festival in Emporia.  This year’s 46th festival starts today (9/25/08) and will continue through the weekend.  The festival opens with the Kick-Off Kook-Off.  Pay $5 in advance ($8 at the gate) and you are a judge.   You’ll get to taste, and score, the entries in three peanut categories: main dish, appetizer/side dish, dessert.

There will be exhibits about the peanut, demonstrations of cooking with peanuts and peanut roasting, and a tour of a peanut farm.

Other activities include a carnival, live Southern rock and beach music, blacksmith demonstrations, a petting zoo, a parade, a car and truck competition, arts and crafts, antique farm machinery, storytelling, a book sale, pumpkin painting, a quilt display, cloggers, and a magic show.
