“Hotta Meat Pies! Get Your Hotta Meat Pies Right Here!”

Posted by Bruce Bilmes and Sue Boyle , September 11, 2008 13:18

We've reposted this blog because the 6th Annual Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival that was originally planned for mid-September was cancelled because of Hurricane Ike.  It has been rescheduled for this coming Friday and Saturday, 10/17/08 and 10/18/08.  So you've got another shot at it!

They say that was the chant of street vendors hawking their Natchitoches meat pies in days gone by.  The history of these meat pies goes back to the 18th century, and Natchitoches, Louisiana is still known for them today, especially at James Lasyone’s Meat Pie Kitchen (Roadfood.com review).  You’ll find Lasyone’s meat pies, along with examples from many other local meat pie cooks, at the 6th Annual Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival this Friday and Saturday, 10/17 and 10/18 (2008).  The festival takes place along the banks of Cane River Lake, where there will be plenty of great things to eat, see, and do.

There will be a meat pie making demonstration at noon Saturday and a meat pie cooking contest at 2 pm (here’s a recipe from the festival website).  The meat pie eating contest begins 3:30 pm.  You can check out the complete festival schedule here.

If any Roadfooders show up for the festival, please call me. (Email me for complete contact info.) As I told Bruce, I can offer a pretty good food tour of the town, and I'd love to see you!

The recipe calls for 2 pounds of meat and, among other things, "...a pod of garlic."

What is a garlic pod?  Is that a single clove or a whole head of garlic?

A pod is a whole head. A single clove would be called a "toe."

Thanks, Rick. I like garlic, but Yikes!, that's a lot of garlic!
