Paczki in Danbury

Beth-ponchky

Danbury, Connecticut: It is spelled paczki but pronounced ponchki, and boy, it is good! Similar to a Bismarck, it is a Polish donut filled with dark, fruity plum jam and glazed with sugar that has the faintest lemon twist. The doughnut itself is airy and risen, brought in fresh that morning from the bakery in Brooklyn to Beth and Her Alley Deli, a charming little Polish grocery just off Main Street. Beth's has shelves of imported vegetables, jams, and sauces, freezers stocked with pierogi, and an assortment of old world breads. There is no place here to sit and eat, but Beth is happy to make a sandwich to go from what she calls "Poland's best cold cuts." I will be back for one of those, and for another paczki, for sure. Paczkis are traditionally available only after Mardi Gras until the first day of Lent. The idea to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in the house, which are forbidden during Lent. I'm sure the gods of Polish goodies look askance at anyone making paczkis outide the traditional window.

Michael,

Do you know the name of the bakery in Brooklyn that supplies them? I'd love to check them out!

I'll ask for the name of the bakery next time I visit.
