August 14th Thru 16th: Bratwurst Festival in Bucyrus, Ohio

We always though that Sheboygan, Wisconsin was America’s bratwurst capitol.  Now we hear Bucyrus, Ohio lays claim to the title.  A Bucyrus brat is unique: the sausage is laced with caraway seeds, and it’s served on a rye bun, with chopped onions, hot mustard, and sauerkraut garnishes (just like the local Carle’s bratwurst pictured above).  Sounds just dandy!  This weekend presents a terrific opportunity to sample the best of the flame-grilled Bucyrus brats as the town puts on their brat bash.  If you can muster the appetite, you might also be interested in trying the local brat casserole, which has similar ingredients to a fully dressed brat, plus noodles and minus the roll.

This festival is big on eating contests.  There’s a bratwurst eating contest, of course, and also a pizza eating contest and a cream puff eating contest.  Other events scheduled include a pretty baby contest, pageants, parades, live music, dancing, and a hoop shoot.  See the festival website for more information.

Not all the locally made bratwurst has caraway seeds, and many brats are served on hot dog buns. For years the outdoor sale and consumption of beer wasn't permitted during the festival, but that's changed, and one can grab a brat at any of many stands and head for a nearby outdoor beer garden to wash down the food.

Michael, do you find the brats, in general, to be much different from the Sheboygan version or are they all pretty much in the same ballpark?

I can't speak to brats from Sheboygan, but I have had them in Milwaukee, Rice Lake, Green Bay and Eau Claire, and they seem about the same to me.
