Located in the heart of downtown New Haven on the corner of College and Chapel Streets, the aptly named Claire’s Corner Copia—a Roadfood favorite—has been the Elm City’s premier vegetarian foodery for over 30 years. Claire’s baked goods, prepared meals, and drink selections proffer the freshest vegetarian, organic and sustainable ingredients available, and its convenient positioning across from Yale warrants stops for snacks and last-minute breakfasts. The latter reason was my impetus for my first visit of the summer, for admittedly I nurse a borderline addiction to her muffins and cookies. A plump blueberry-bran muffin (pictured above), boasting still-moist berries and soft squiggles of bran throughout the spongy cake, helped me to break my fast one morning. I couldn’t resist bagging a couple of cookies to go as well: a Ranger (oatmeal-chocolate chip) and a Sunbutter cookie. The Sunbutter is made with vegan peanut butter, and it tastes like a couple of spoonfuls of peanut butter right out of the jar—very thick and creamy. In fact, it almost stuck to the roof of my mouth! On another morning, I chose the raspberry-bran muffin (below) and another Sunbutter cookie. Claire’s also makes glorious smoothies, pizzas, sandwiches, and salads, which begs the question: why can’t all vegetarian restaurants be this good?
