The New Jersey State Fair always seemed to be a half-hearted affair until it finally joined with the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show in Augusta some years back. Today’s fair now exhibits a much greater agricultural orientation than it used to. Some fair highlights include The Incredible Milking Cow, a fiberglass, life-size cow that kids will be able to milk, the fainting goats (they stiffen and topple over when startled), and Beulah the elephant. A fireworks show is set for opening night Friday. Entertainment will include the Sussex County Horse Show, plus tractor pulls, oxen pulls, demolition derbies, monster trucks, lawnmower racing, diving dogs, and church choirs!
The edible highlights? The Knights of Columbus will be serving steamers, the Branchville Rotary has roast beef sandwiches, and there’s lobster bisque, lobster salad sandwiches, and grilled shrimp from Carly’s. You can get free samples of Jersey dairy products in the Jersey Fresh Tent. And don’t forget the grilled chicken pictured above!
See the fair’s website for details.
