When my foodie friend Susan discovered that I’d never been to Judies Bakery on Grove Street for lunch, she immediately asked, “When are you free?” As it turns out, Judies has been providing artisan breads to greater New Haven for the last 30 years. Lunch is an elegantly casual affair that makes me wish that I owned a panini press. We split two sandwiches: the Grilled Chicken Pesto on a fresh sesame roll with smoked mozzarella, pesto, and slow-roasted tomatoes; and the Grilled Prosciutto on whole-wheat rustico with thick-sliced Parma prosciutto, the same locally-made mozz, tomato, and basil. The bread was nothing less than phenomenal, and flavor-mingling fillings punctuated every softly crunchy bite. We also couldn’t resist oversized bowls of Judies’ famous tomato soup, drizzled with bright-green, basil-infused olive oil and with large hunks of French peasant bread for dipping. Taking a large chocolate-chip cookie to go, I must return for another sandwich and a few of Judies’ take-out loaves of brioche and challah.
