Montana’s state fair begins this weekend in Great Falls and runs through the following weekend. The fair will feature the Big Sky ProRodeo Roundup (and the Rodeo Queen), horse racing, concerts of all kinds including that fair favorite, Alice Cooper (?!), and dozens of livestock, creative arts, culinary, and farm exhibits.
Some of the more interesting food items from the huge selection offered at the fair include huckleberry sundaes, mini-donuts with huckleberry-honey sauce, buffalo burgers, vikings on a stick (some sort of breaded hamburger, on a stick of course), lefse (a Norwegian flatbread), krumkaker (thin, rolled Norwegian cookies), cowboy cocktails (not a clue), Indian tacos, pork chop sandwiches, BBQ beef tri-tip sandwiches, tacos in a bag (like a Frito pie, but with taco ingredients instead of chili, served in the Frito bag), German sausages, bratwurst, and sausages galore on sticks (they really like food on sticks in these parts), fried cheese curds, cowpies (grilled hamburgers, dipped in batter and deep fried – we are not making this up!), Rice Krispie treats on a stick, and sweet prairie pies (anyone?).
