Maine is not just about lobsters! They are expecting 120,000 visitors to the 43rd Annual Yarmouth Clam Festival. And this one is loaded with good food. Clams? There will be whole fried clams in crumbs, fried clam strips, clam cakes, steamed clams, fried clams in batter, and clam chowder. And there’s more than clams: fried calamari, fried oysters, muffins, cinnamon rolls, meatball grinders, whoopie pies, blueberry crisp, lobster rolls, crabmeat rolls, scallop rolls, crab cakes, homebaked cheesecake, peach shortcake, fried shrimp, haddock fingers, lobsters, corn on the cob, shore dinners, lime rickeys, strawberry shortcake, fried dough, steamed red dogs, homemade pie, lobster stew, donuts… it’s like an encyclopedia of Maine and New England cuisine! Plus there’s a blueberry pancake breakfast at the Memorial Green and a flapjack breakfast at the First Parish Church.
Is there anything to do between meals? Absolutely! There will be free horse drawn wagon rides down Main Street; a cooking demo with chef Jon Ashton; the clam festival parade, led by Steamer the Clam; clam-shucking contests; a firefighters muster (these are always lots of fun); loads of live music and dancing of just about every imaginable type. And don’t forget to check out the giant two by three foot clamshell picked up from Guadalcanal during WWII.
There’s plenty more. Check it all out at the festival website.
