The first of the summer state fairs begins this Thursday when the Delaware State Fair opens at 5 p.m. The fair takes place in Harrington, about an hour and a quarter south of Wilmington. It’s been a few years since we last attended but we remember this fair as having some particularly good roasted and grilled chicken stands operated by community groups. Good scrapple sandwiches too. Of course, there’ll be plenty of farm animals, contests galore, 4-H exhibits, tractor pulls, a demolition derby, rides, and country music headliners such as Martina McBride, Trace Adkins, and Brooks & Dunn. See the festival website for more info.
One other note: we recall that on the drive back north from the fair, there are a few excellent looking roadside farm stands. We always returned from the fair with a trunk full of gorgeous local vegetables and fruit.
