DE Sandwich Makers Switch to Philly Rolls; Customers Howl

Amalfitano’s bakery in Delaware has been the supplier of sub rolls to many of the favorite sandwich shops in the state, including Capriotti’s.  Then last month, Amalfitano’s was sold to D’Ambrosio’s of Philadelphia.  The Delaware ovens were turned off and the rolls started coming from Philly.  Seems Amalfitano’s customers were not told of the change; the new owners just continued the usual roll deliveries, but with the new bread.

The rolls are different, and Delawareans are not happy.  D’Ambrosio''s is scrambling to try to duplicate the Delaware bread more closely while at the same time many of their customers are looking around for a suitable replacement.  Read more in The News Journal article by Eric Ruth.

Pictured above is a big turkey sub from Capriotti's, pre-roll change, from our Roadfood.com review.  We really do understand how local tastes are local tastes; that's much of the point of Roadfood, after all.  Still, here's a comment from our review: "A note to bread lovers: the sub rolls used are impeccably fresh, but soft and simple in taste. They serve to showcase the filling, but are not of great interest in themselves."  The Bobbie at Capriotti's is a great sandwich, but we have yet to try it on the new bread.

Thanks for the warning - I'll have my local contacts give me a report of the new bread at Capriotti's in Wilmington.
