A cake donut at Dottie's Diner is not too sweet (at least not compared to a cup of sugar), so thinking of dessert after a batch of them is only slightly insane. In fact, I would not have thought about dessert after my morning trio of chocolate, cinnamon, and powdered sugar donuts if I hadn't seen Dottie carrying a tray of cream cheese turnovers from the kitchen. "How are those?" I asked. All the waitresses behind the counter chimed in: "The best!" ... "My mother's favorite!" ... "Can't stop eating them!" I can now join their enthusiastic chorus, for this is one fine pastry. Freshly powdered and still quite warm from the oven, my turnover was filled with a thin line of raspberry preserves whose extreme sweetness did make it a fitting donut dessert. The turnover itself was basically a rich, flaky pie crust, its savory satisfaction just the right canvas for fruity filling.
